Melasma is a discoloration of the skin caused by a combination of hormones and sunlight. The skin appears blotchy and stained. Aside from direct sun exposure, stress (emotional or physical), thyroid problems, hormonal contraceptives, pregnancy, certain medications such as beta blockers and thyroid meds as well as sunlight at distant body sites can stimulate MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone) and flare melanoma. Multiple treatment modalities may be required to safely treat your melasma, but the most important component is STRICT sun protection.
